A floorball pre-match routine: what to do from the night before to the first face-off
Match performance isn’t born at the first face-off. It’s born the day before and in the hours leading up to it. A routine makes it something you don’t have to reinvent each time — you just switch it on.
The evening before the match
The most important thing is sleep. One bad night before a match worsens reaction time and decision-making more than you’d admit. Prepare your things in advance so you’re not stressed in the morning, and go to bed at your usual time. A light dinner with enough carbs tops up energy stores.
Food on match day
- Main meal 3–4 hours before — carbs (rice, pasta, potatoes), lighter protein, low fat and fibre so it doesn’t weigh you down.
- A light snack 1–2 hours before — a banana, toast, a bar. Nothing new you haven’t tried.
- Hydration all day, not only in the locker room. Add salt when it’s hot.
A dynamic warm-up
Skip static stretching before performance — prepare the body for explosiveness dynamically: a light jog, knee and heel kicks, lunges, hip openers, a few acceleration runs and finally sharp full starts. The goal is to raise the heart rate, mobilise the joints and “switch on” the nervous system, not to tire yourself out.
The head
A mental routine matters as much as a physical one. A few calm breaths, a simple plan (what to focus on: the first step, communication, body play) and switching into “match mode”. It’s not about big motivational speeches, but about calm and clarity.
How to keep it consistent
A routine works only when it’s the same. Note what you play best after — how you slept, what you ate, how you warmed up — and look for patterns. NEXT8 keeps the data together for you: you’ll see that after good sleep and a calm morning it simply goes better, and you’ll repeat it next time.
In short
- Performance starts with sleep the night before.
- Main meal 3–4 h before, a light snack 1–2 h before, nothing new.
- Warm up dynamically, finish with sharp starts.
- Add a short mental routine — calm and a clear plan.
